Chardonnay Technical Workshop, Hawke’s Bay

The New Zealand Society for Viticulture and Oenology is excited to announce that it's Technical Workshop is returning wth a focus on the classic grape variety Chardonnay.

This year we have partnered with Hawke's Bay Winegrowers to deliver our annual workshop as part of the Aotearoa New Zealand Chardonnay Symposium. A new event with purpose and depth, Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers aim to host ANZCS annually.

NZSVO will run our technical workshop on 'Day One' in its renowned format - transitioning between sessions that incorporate science, practice and discussion. Hawke's Bay Winegrowers' 'Day Two' will continue the conversation, with Masters of Wine and international media discussing NZ Chardonnay in a global context. Across the workshops, over 50 wines will be tasted.

Bridging the two day event, HBWG will host the 'Great New Zealand Chardonnay Celebration' in the newly refurbished laneways precinct of the Toitoi Event & Arts Centre. (All day coffee station, morning tea and lunch included.)

Tickets limited to 150 delegates.

What to expect on ‘Day One’:

NZSVO is delighted to have Emma Jenkins MW as a returning speaker. Emma duly encouraged delegates to ask questions and think outside the square at our 2022 Alternative Varieties workshop. We know she will evoke the same enthusiastic conversation around the ever evolving topic of NZ Chardonnay.

Session One features a dynamic trio of academics. Chaired by Dr Olaf Schelezki, the science and chemistry behind 'Struck Match' will be discussed in depth with Dr Tracey Siebert of Australia Wine Research Institute and Dr Rebecca Deed of Auckland University.

Session Two welcomes Steve Flamsteed and Julian Grounds. With plenty to share from when they worked together at Giant Steps in Yarra Valley, they'll both bring impressive further insights to the table with their extensive chardonnay experience across Australasia.

Traversing some of NZ's most exciting Chardonnay regions, Session Three & Four gets up close and personal with Hawke's Bay, Martinborough, Marlborough, Nelson and North Canterbury.
