Getting to grips with Pinot Noir - a look at Pinot Noir tannin management

Speaker Profile

Eveline Fraser

Winemaker

Although she lays claim to the salubrious title of first woman brewer in New Zealand – a position she held with Lion Breweries for six years – Eveline Fraser joined the Cloudy Bay winemaking team on the strength of her reputation for producing some of the finest sauvignon blanc in the Wairau Valley.

Prior to joining the company for the 2001 vintage, Eveline directed the winemaking for Rapaura Vintners’ Marlborough clients, an environment in which she developed a wide ranging knowledge of the district and of the many wine styles produced under her guidance.

Bubbles run deep in Eveline’s veins, evidenced by her passion for Pelorus, Cloudy Bay’s sparkling wine. After working a vintage at Veuve Clicquot, Eveline refined the Pelorus winemaking process, making subtle improvements which took some four years to emerge in the bottle … but were worth the wait.

A real ‘people person’, Eveline loves following the wine ‘to the end of the line’ and has pioneered Cloudy Bay’s winemaking presence in Finland and Norway. She also visits the USA and New Zealand markets regularly.

An early advocate of screwcap technology, Eveline co-ordinated an extensive in-house trial that led to Cloudy Bay adopting screwcaps gradually over several vintages.

Eveline lives in the heart of the Wairau Valley where she thrives on the alpine climate, cycling and long lunches with friends.
