Alistair Maling MW

Group Winemaker Villa Maria Wines
Alastair Maling’s winemaking career has seen him travel extensively throughout the old and new world wine regions of the planet gaining a wealth of experience with an impressive range of grape varietals and international winemaking styles.
In 1995, Alastair took up a position working for Hugh Ryman Wines overseeing winemaking projects in France, California and South Africa. Then in 1996 he started working as a flying winemaker for International Wine Services in the UK. Over the subsequent six years he focused exclusively on working with localised wine making techniques in diverse climatic regions particularly in Europe and South America.
His commitment to excellence in winemaking grew evident in 2000 when he became the sixth New Zealander to pass the prestigious Master of Wine Exam, and the second only winemaker. In 2002, two years later, he returned to New Zealand to take up the position of Group Winemaker at Villa Maria Estate.
Alastair was named in the Decanter Wine magazine (2003) as one of 5 young New Zealanders to “watch out for” in the wine industry. He has also been honoured with Winemaker of the Year at the Royal Easter Wine Show a number of times - in 2004, 2005 and again this year, 2008.
Maling was also awarded the White Winemaker of the Year trophy at one of the world’s most highly regarded wine competitions, the 2007 International Wine Challenge in London.
