Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Journal

Volume 24 (6) 2009

OVER-SUPPLY STATEMENT

The joint statement issued by Australia's four national wine bodies that for the first time formally recognises and quantifies the over-supply of grapes and wine, has called the industry to action at both an individual and regional level to start to remedy the issue.

With the industry now making an attempt to reduce the level of grape and wine over-supply, Tony Keys says the plans for the industry presented in the Strategy 2025 document - released in June 1996 - may not have been as far off the mark as industry leaders have believed in the meantime.

NEW WINE INDUSTRY AWARD

From 1 January 2010, wine industry employers will have to interpret, understand and comply with the Wine Industry Award 2010, as explained by South Australian Wine Industry Association chief executive Brian Smedley.

RICHARD SMART

Dr Richard Smart has had a long-standing interest in the effects of climate on grape and wine production. On the eve of the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, he considered if the Australian wine industry has the will, and the ability, to cope with a changing climate.

NEW VARIETIES, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Barossa Valley grape variety pioneer Damien Tscharke shares his experience with the native Italian red grape Montepulciano, calling it the 'Italian stallion' of the Australian wine industry.

AWRI REPORT

The Australian Wine Research Institute seeks answers to the question of, 'Do we need a new approach to bunch exposure in Australian vineyards?'

FERMENTATION

Researchers from the University of Arkansas, in the US, chose the Wine industry Journal to publish the results of their performance testing of a yeast rehydration aid and a nitrogen-containing supplement as tools for winemakers using active dried yeast for wine production.

BUSINESS, MARKETING AND EXPORT

Following Jonathan Scott's visit to the 2nd Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Trade Fair in November, he reports on this "sophisticated consumer market" dominated by red wine imports and suggests it continues to present excellent opportunities for Australian wine exporters.

The results of a study involving how restaurateurs design wine lists in Western-style and Asian-style restaurants, respectively, are presented by Louis Chapon, of SupAgro, in Montepellier, France, and Herve Remaud, of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science, at the University of South Australia.

VALMAI HANKEL

"Life is more pleasant with wine," according to the advertising promotions of the Australian Wine Board, now the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, from 1954 to 1971; an era vastly different to the modern Australian wine industry.

BOTRYTIS SEMILLON REPORT

Since its first release in 1982, De Bortoli Wines' Noble One Botrytis Semillon has become one of the world's most awarded wines. Its creator Darren De Bortoli shares the historical story of the wine and plans for the future of the brand. Other Riverina-based makers of Botrytis Semillon are joined by their counterparts in other regions and States to share their methods of working with Botrytis cinerea and keeping often slow ferments on the bubble.
