Volume 24 (5) 2009

COMMENT

Outgoing president of the South Australian Wine Industry Association John Angove told guests at this year's annual general meeting that he believes the industry's glass remains half full, and highlighted several positives to take into the next decade.

RICHARD SMART

Dr Richard Smart attended two significant conferences in France in July this year, hosted by French grapevine training group GESCO, which included discussion about naturalist Charles Darwin, who many are unaware had a great interest in grapevines and other climbing plants.

NEW VARIETIES, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Co-owner of the Adelaide Hills' Hahndorf Hill Winery, Larry Jacobs, gives a historical account of Eastern European red winegrape Lemberger. Known as Blaufrankisch in its native Austria, Hahndorf Hill Winery is believed to have the only plantings of the variety in Australia.

AWRI REPORT

With a focus on Sauvignon Blanc, a group of AWRI researchers with expertise in sensory assessment have studied the post-bottling management of oxygen to reduce off-flavour formation to optimise wine style.

WINE MATURATION

Following the Wine Industry Journal's first reports in 2007 about the work being undertaken by Cavitus Pty Ltd into the role of high power ultrasonics in removing the deposits responsible for Brettanomyces infection in barrels, Andrew Yap and Warwick Bagnall present the results of the company's latest trials.

Tasmanian correspondent Mark Smith reports on the role of Flextank's wine maturation vessels in a three-year $1.8m research program into Pinot Noir, which commenced in the State last year.

CLOSURES

Innovation for Success columnist Vince O'Brien is joined by AWRI research manager - sensory Leigh Francis and senior sensory scientist Patricia Osidacz to report on the outcomes of the 24-month testing interval of the AWRI's white wine closure trial.

Wine industry consultant Mark Gishen discusses the importance of validating closure performance specifications and tests, suggestingthat if the results are of no practical use, the investment should be reconsidered.

French correspondent Damien Wilson commentates on the general attitude of European wine-producing countries toward alternative closures to cork.

BUSINESS, MARKETING AND EXPORT

Tony Keys attended the August launch of the newly-formed Australia's First Families of Wine and posed questions to the key players about their plans for marketing the group and, in turn, the Australian wine industry.

Many Australian wine businesses have been assisted by the Federal Government's Export Market Development Scheme in its various forms over 35 years. Jonathan Scott provides an update on its latest manifestation and how it can help small to medium sized producers.

CHENIN BLANC VARIETAL REPORT

Swan District vigneron Jason Conti, of Paul Conti Wines, gives an insight to the many pleasing qualities of Chenin Blanc and shares his experience with the variety. Growers, winemakers and marketers from Victorian, South Australian and Western Australian companies follow with reports about their work with Chenin Blanc, before the wines are put to the test in a blind tasting.
